“STRUCTURAL REFORMS SHOULD GO AHEAD”
Making evaluations on Turkish Economy, Prof. Dr. Özgür Demirtaş said that focusing on reforms after the economic crisis in 2001, Turkey had a very successful period between 2002-2008. Stating that reforms have been lived up slower, Mr. Demirtaş emphasised that structural reforms should be continued to gather speed in economy.
Mentioning that the parameters on economic growth of Turkey is in good state but the nature of growth should be changed, Mr. Demirtaş said “Turkey has not any problem in terms of economic growth.” Thanks to its younger population and dynamic patterns, Turkey can achieve growth on its own, even if not taken in hand by anybody. We must change the nature of growth. The share of government on growth is very essential. Any growth supported by the government cannot be sustainable. By providing economic confidence, we need to make a transition to an economic structure in which the private sector can take its own investment decisions. We must do this to ensure not only economic growth but also developments in many fields.
“I think well of Q1”
Stating that Turkey needs value-added production and an economic model with high degree of learning, Mr. Demirtaş expressed his expectations for 2018. He mentioned that he thinks well of especially Q1 of the year and said “Dollar index has plummeted to record low levels. The European Union, which is the most important market for us, create a positive atmosphere. We have managed better relationship with the other countries, especially with Germany. The developments encountered in these countries effect our economy positively. Besides, the decision on interest rates taken by the Central Bank is also a sound decision. These are encouraging developments for the first and second quarters of the year.”
“An excellent move for the transition process of value-added production”
Speaking to TEKNOSAB Project to be carried out by BTSO, Prof. Dr. Özgür Demirtaş emphasised that it is a step in absolutely the right direction. Stating that the economic problems of Turkey have been based on the lack of value-added production, Mr. Demirtaş said “there is not only way to make value-added production, much more thing have been thought and carried out. You can put your signature under some very beautiful projects by carrying out incredible investments, but if there is a lack of human resources, it will be no use to man or beast. Top-level engineers will be needed for TEKNOSAB Project. I took to heart for solution suggestions of BTSO and found them so impressive.”
